 PHASES IN COMPLETING A WELL

 PLANNING PHASE
 EXECUTION PHASE
 WELL TESTING
INTRODUCTION
 Completion, in petroleum production, is the process of making a
well ready for production.
 This principally involves preparing the bottom of the hole to the
required specifications; running in the production tubing and it’s
associated down hole tools as well as perforating.
 Reasons why a well is completed includes:

- To connect the reservoir to the surface so that fluids can be

produced

- To provide a conduit for well intervention

- To isolate the producing reservoir from other zones

PLANNING PHASE
 A completion system must provide a means of oil or gas
production, which is safe, efficient/ economic and reliable.

STEPS IN PLANNING COMPLETIONS

  Establish objectives and design criteria
 Data collection: As in all design and execution processes, the
acquisition of accurate or representative data is essential.
 Determining specifications of tools and services required Fluids
used to drill, cement or service the pay zone should be closely
scrutinized and selected to minimize the likelihood of formation
damage
PLANNING PHASE
 Defining an appropriate cleanup program to enable the
ultimate production rate to be achieved safely and without
damage to the reservoir, completion components or surface
production facilities.
 Design of any initial stimulation treatment incase there’s a
damage of the near well bore area during drilling.
 Design a completions program
EXECUTION PHASE
 With all design data gathered and verified, the completion
component selection, assembly and installation process
commences.

STEPS IN COMPLETING A WELL

 Prepare the wellbore through the zone of interest for the
completion installation phase
 Installing the Tubing and other completion accessories.
 Packer, SSD, SSSV, Centralizers, Nipples, Screens and GLM are
some of the major accessories run alongside the tubing.
EXECUTION PHASE
 Installing the Christmas Tree

• A collection of valves called a Christmas tree is installed on

the surface at the top of the casing hanger.

• As the well’s production flows up the tubing, it enters the

Christmas tree.

• So, the production can be controlled by opening or closing

valves on the Christmas tree
WELL TESTING
 A well test is the execution of a set of planned data acquisition activities to
broaden the knowledge and understanding of hydrocarbons properties and
characteristics of the underground reservoir where hydrocarbons are trapped.
 The overall objective is identifying the reservoirs capacity to produce
hydrocarbon
 Example of such test is Drill Stem Test (DST); In newly developed reservoirs
or high-risk developments it may be worthwhile to test the well before
completing it or installing full production facilities.
 In well testing, the most important objectives are:

- Reservoir evaluation

- Reservoir management and

- Reservoir description
WELL TESTING
 Reservoir evaluation helps in describing how best to produce
the reservoir by considering the deliverability, properties of the
fluids and pressure of the reservoir
 Reservoir management involves monitoring the performance
and condition of the reservoir by monitoring changes in
average reservoir pressure, monitoring conditions of well and if
possible to be able to determine fluid front migration.
 Reservoir description involves assessing the reservoir
architecture like faults, barriers etc and also providing bulk
reservoir properties.
