 How Is The Oxygen In The Atmosphere
Replaced?
WHAT IS AIR?
Air is present everywhere around us. Air
has no colour and no one can see through
it. It is transparent.

Our earth is surrounded by a thin layer of

air. This layer extends up to many
kilometres above the surface of the earth
and is called atmosphere.

The Atmosphere can be divided into

layers according to their temperature.
These layers are known as Troposphere,
Stratosphere, Mesosphere and
Thermosphere. A further region,
beginning about 700 km above the
Earth's surface, is called the exosphere.
WHAT IS AIR
MADE UP OF?

Air is a mixture of
gases. It consists of 78%
Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen
and 1% of other gases
too, like Carbon
Dioxide, neon and
hydrogen
HOW DOES
OXYGEN BECOME
AVAILABLE TO
ANIMALS AND
PLANTS LIVING
IN WATER AND
SOIL?

Oxygen dissolved in water is

used by the aquatic
organisms to breathe through
special organs called gills or
directly through the skin. Eg.
Fish The organisms living in
soil and plant roots get
oxygen by the air present in
the spaces formed in between
soil particles. Eg.
Earthworms
HOW IS THE
OXYGEN IN THE
ATMOSPHERE
REPLACED?

The oxygen in the

atmosphere is replaced
by the plants. During
the process of
photosynthesis, plants
take in CO2 and release
oxygen.
