INTRODUCTION TO

WWW
LESSON 1
INTERNET OR NET
 It is made up of millions of interconnected
computer network that link together millions of
educational institutions, businesses, government,
and individuals using modems, telephone lines and
other communication devices.
Internet is a short term for inter-network.
INTERNET OR
NET
There is no central authority that controls the Internet.
There are organizations, which develop the technical
aspects of this network and set standards for creating
applications on it, but no governing body is in control.
This is often called the Information Highway.
Internet supports variety of access protocol to allow
various types of services.
World Wide Web

 Part of the Internet where computers

communicate with each other using a computer
network protocol called http.
 It is an Internet service available on the net that
allows you to get information about anything and
everything from any site.
World Wide Web

Its primary feature is “Hyperlink” that interlink a

large number of pages of text on different
computers all over the world, creating a spider
web-like system of links.
 Almost every protocol type available on the net is
accessible on the web.
2 Components of WWW

1. Server: This stores information and process

requests from client. Server applications are
typically run on powerful computers.
2. Client: This makes request for information and
display that information to the end user.
Network Protocol

 These are set of rules that allow for inter-machine

communication on the internet.
 These are standard method of transmitting and
processing various kinds of information in the net.
Major Network
Protocol

1. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) : This

protocol distributes electronic messages and files to
one or more electronic mailboxes. MIME (Multimedia
Internet Mail Extension) was developed to help
software to handle a variety of file types.
Major Network Protocol

2. FTP (File Transfer Protocol): Provides a method for

copying files over a network from one computer to
another. Sites that have a lot of downloading will have an
ftp server to handle the traffic. The URL will have ftp:.

Protocol
3. VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol): This allows user to
place a telephone call over the web.

4. HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol): An HTML page is

transmitted over the web in a standard way and format
known as http. A webpage using this protocol will have https:
at the front of its URL.
How the WWW
works

1. Through the use of special software, they form a kind

of network called a Client-Server network.

works

2. Servers store information and process requests from

Clients. Then they send the requested information to
the Clients. This information includes all kinds of data,
including images, sounds, and text.
Servers also send instructions to the client on how to
display all this information. These instructions are sent
in the form of HTML.
How the WWW
works

3. Clients make request for information and then handle

the chore of displaying that information to the end user.
When you are using a Web browser to navigate the web,
your browsing software is acting as a Client.
