We've all heard of William
Shakespeare. Most people will be
able to name a few of the plays he
wrote. Many of his plays have
been made into films and they are
all still performed around the
world today.
A Trip To The Theatre
oOne of the most popular types of
entertainment in Tudor times was watching a
group of actors in a play.
oQueen Elizabeth herself loved watching a
group of actors in a play and would often get a
group of actors to visit her palace to act for
her.
oIn 1576, an actor named James Burbage saw a
chance to make some money from plays and built
the first successful permanent theatre, which was
located in north-east of London.
oBy 1600, watching a play was probably one of
the most popular forms of entertainment in the
country.
oTheatres were round with no roof, so plays were
usually performed during the day.
oThere were different prices for the seats in
the galleries, depending on how close you were
or whether your seat had a cushion or not (1-3
pence).
oMoney was collected and stored in locked
boxes. This is where we get the term 'box
office!
oThere were no female actors; all parts were
played by men or boys.
oThe popularity of the theatre led people to earn a living by
writing new plays.
oBy far the most famous writer is William Shakespeare.
oShakespeare wrote at least 37 and even acted in some of
them. His plays are famous all over the world.
o They are important because Shakespeare wrote about
everyday human emotions, such as love, hate and jealousy.
o We all experience these feelings today and people can relate
to them whatever century his plays are set in.
