THE TERM DEFAMATION
■ Defamation refers to an act of damaging a person’s character, fame, and
or reputation , by false and malicious claims .
■ Therefore, defamation is any publication of such a false statement that
lowers the image of an individual in society , in the eyes of a right
thinking section of society , leading people to avoiding or shunning that
person completely

DEFINITIONS OF DEFAMATION
■ In Black Law’s Dictionary – “Defamation means offense or injuring a person’s
character, fame or reputation by false or malicious statements”.
■ Salmond defined as - “Defamation is the publication of false and defamatory
statements concerning another person without lawful justification”.
TYPES OF DEFAMATION
■ Libel
When a person has posted some false facts in any kind of published media or newspaper
about someone due to which there is a loss of reputation. It is called as Libel.
■ Slander
When a defamatory statement is made verbal to any third person and not published
anywhere is called as a Slander
