José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda

CHAPTER 1
Dr. Jose Rizal is our national hero. He had many skills and talents.
He was born on June 19, 1861. he was baptized on June 22.

Jose Rizal called “Pepe” by his family, the seventh child


out of eleven –children. His father’s name was
Francisco Mercado Rizal.
His mother’s name Dona Teodora.
Rizal’s Brother and Sisters were:
1. Saturnina (1850-1913) 7. Jose (1861-1896)
2. Paciano (1851-1930) 8. Concepcion (1865-1865)
3. Narcisa (1852-1939) 9. Josefa (1865-1945)
4. Olimpia (1855-1887) 10. Trinidad (1868-1951)
5. Lucia(1857-1919) 11. Soledad (1870-1929)
6. Maria (1858-1945)
Paciano was Jose Rizal’s only brother, so he was
Rizal’s idol. Rizal Called Paciano the “Most Noble
of Filipino”
Rizal’s Ancestry was a mixture of many races. His
great-great-grandfather was from mainland china.
He changed his last name to “Mercado” which is
Spanish for “market”.
The Rizal’s were part of the principalia or town
elites of Calamba. They had a big stone house.
They also owned their own carriage. They had
the largest private library li Calamba. The
children went to college in Manila.
