SWD-PA with circular parabolic absorber; (a) Schematic diagram, (b) Parabolic absorber photo, (c) Parabolic absorber half
view with trough geometry (scale in cm).
DESCRIPTION OF SWD-PA
The SWD-PA idea is based on a parabolic absorber utilized to absorb and transfer the solar radiation to
five troughs installed directly with it.
A circular parabolic dish with 120 cm diameter made from aluminum sheets with 3 mm thickness and
designed according to the equation y = 0.0084 x2 is utilized as an absorber of solar radiation.
The outer edge of the dish is extended by a 15 cm aluminum strip with 3 mm thickness to increase the
evaporation cavity.
A commercial glass thickness of 4 mm and diameter = 120 cm is utilized as a transparent cover and
condenser for the SWD-PA.
The SWD-PA is supported from the bottom by a metal frame and tilted by the 30-degree angle with a
vertical axis.
Five water troughs made of a 2 mm thick aluminum sheet which utilized to be filled with saline water,
were attached in the horizontal level to the inner surface of the absorber with 20 cm spacing.
The troughs tilted by about a 5-degree angle with a vertical axis for the multi-effect principle
and condensation process.
Water trough dimensions with depth = 2.5 cm and horizontal extend according to the inner
surface profile in three dimensional with equal distance from the glass cover = 10 cm.
To increase solar heat gain, the inside surfaces of the parabolic absorbers and troughs have been
coated black.
Fiberglass insulation with 5 cm thickness the thermal conductivity 0.04 W/m.K is utilized as a
thermal insulation material to reduce the heat dissipated from the parabolic absorber to the
surrounding and extend strip to the surrounding.
