9 SHELL LIFE-SAVING RULES

Hydraulic system in physic theory

“The pressure exerted on a fluid that is not compressible and in

equilibrium in a vessel with non-deformable walls is transmitted with
equal intensity in all directions and at all points of the fluid.” Blaise
Pascal

The main function of hydraulic is to transmit energy/power !

Deep analysis for pump in hydraulic system

There is big potential metal to metal occurs !

Gear Pump Vane Pump Piston Pump
“Under boundary conditions, a sacrificial layer of anti-wear additive (typically zinc-based) is established on the load-bearing
surface of machine components to help protect against the results of friction.

The disadvantages of zinc-based additives include their corrosion of certain metals and environmental impact. A number of
components even include instructions to avoid zinc-based additive lubricants for this reason.”

A dilemma to add EP additive to hydraulic oil…

With wrong oil viscosity, Cavitation may occurs !

Cavitation also may initiate oxidation, due Oxygen produces within oil !

Hydraulic Pump Efficiency
Volumetric efficiency relates to the flow losses within
a hydraulic component and the degree to which internal
leakage occurs.

Mechanical efficiency refers to the energy consumed

to “push” fluid through pump. As the fluid viscosity
increases, for example due to an inability to handle low
temperatures, mechanical efficiency also decreases.

With right oil viscosity selection, hydraulic system can

run in optimum operating range !!
For those reasons, we need be more carefully to
choose oil of our hydraulic system !

Five key areas of hydraulic system protection and oil life
•Wear Protection – Protects pumps and system components
•Thermal Stability – Promotes cleaner running systems and protects metal parts from
corrosive attack
•Oxidation Stability – Promotes longer fluid and equipment life
•Hydrolytic Stability – Protects yellow metals from corrosion
•Filterability – Promotes cleaner running systems and efficiency of filters
Zinc Based Additive Usage for anti wear

Only Shell Tellus S3 M that free from zinc base additive, other shell
tellus are using it as EP additive.
