Acute flaccid paralysis

Surveillance
1. Finding and reporting children
with acute flaccid paralysis
• The first limks in the surveillance chaim
are the staff in all health facilities - from
district health centres to large hospitals.
They must promptly report every case
of acute Flaccid paralysis (AFP) in any
child under 15 years of age.
2. Transporting stool samples for
analysis
• All children with AFP should be
reported and tested for wild poliovirus
within 48 hours of onset.
• Two specimens, 24-48 hours aart are
required.
• Specimens to be stored at 4-8 degree
Celsius. And should arrive the lab
within 72 hours.
3. Isolating poliovirus
• The Virologists in the laboratory ,should
isolate the poliovirus from the stool
specimen, and then distinguish
between the wild virus and vaccine
related virus,since the oral vaccine
contains the live attenuated virus and
resembles the wild virus in the
laboratory.
4.Mapping the virus
• Once the wild virus is identified, further
tests are done to determinewhere the
strain may have originated.
• By doing so, wild viruses can be
compared to others and classified into
genetic families which cluster in defined
geographical areas.
