Also known as Indian Leprosy Association.

It was founded in 1950 and it’s headquarters are in New Delhi.


History –

The Hindu Kusht Nivaran Sangh (HKNS), the Indian Leprosy


Association, registered in 1949 is successor of the British
Empire Leprosy Relief Association (BELRA), which was founded
well back in 1925.
Leprosy -
• A chronic, curable infectious disease mainly causing skin
lesions and nerve damage.
• Leprosy is caused by infection with the bacterium
Mycobacterium leprae.
• It mainly affects the skin, eyes,
nose and peripheral nerves.
• Leprosy is curable with a combination
of drugs known as multidrug therapy (MDT).
Vision -
It is an old prestigious body of people committed
towards treatment and
rehabilitation of leprosy patients.

Built a Leprosy free India.

It has objectives of serving leprosy afflicted individuals, removing


stigma of leprosy from the society and promoting social & research
activities in the field of leprosy in India.
HKNS & Team -
• The team of experts associated with HKNS have been instrumental in
designing the concept of National Leprosy Control Programme {NCLP}
& National Leprosy Eradication Program {NLEP}.

• HKNS has one of the richest resource / library on leprosy.

• The HKNS works for leprosy eradication alongwith the NLEP of Govt.
Of India.
Work done by HKNS -

• The programme of work of the sangh includes rendering of financial


assistance to various leprosy home and clinics.
• Health education is provided through publications and posters.

• Conducting research and field investigation.

• Organising All India Leprosy workers conferences.

• Publications of quarterly journal – ‘Leprosy in India’.


The main areas of work are -
• Health education and school health programmes.

• Community awareness program.

• Involve the community to reduce stigma.

• Promoting self – reporting of cases.

• Rehabilitation of leprosy patients.

• Mass awareness campaign.

• Capacity building training.

• Socio economic empowerment of Leprosy affected persons.
