ESSAY WRITING

What is an essay?
The word essay derives from the French infinitive essayer, "to try" or
"to attempt".
You therefore must try or attempt to argue your opinion or findings
based on the evidence before you - in this case based on the sources
you collect concerning a Global Goal issue of your own choice
GUIDING QUESTIONS

To help you consider how you are going to write your essay, you may like to consider the following and how they link to
the Global Goals.
• What do you consider to be the single most important societal problem at the moment?
• What do you see as the greatest threat to the environment today?
• Companies spend millions each year on advertising online, in magazines and on television. This encourages people to
buy goods they don’t necessarily need.
• People today rely too much on technology

You do not necessarily have to answer these questions (but you may as long as they are linked to your goal) or use
these ideas, rather see them as a way to get you started.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS

• Describe the problems that your goal discusses.

• Make sure to have a proper thesis statement that clearly states the issue and your own opinion on
the matter.
• Discuss how people are experiencing and living with the problems as described by your goal.
• Include specific examples to make it more understandable to the reader.
• Conclusion – this should say what could be, or what should be done to help people over-come
the situation they are living with.
• Include a glossary of any links, quotes etc at the end.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS

• Watch your punctuation, word order, as well as grammar. Think about

your vocabulary too. Use as much information as you can but of course
write it in your own words.
• Your essay should be 500-600 words (not including the source list).
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU’RE
WRITING
• To what extent have you understood the implications of the issue you’re writing about?
• How relevant and focussed are your ideas to the argument?
• Is there evidence of analysis of the situation?
• Are the ideas supported by well-chosen examples?
• How organised and persuasive is your essay?
• How coherent is the essay structure?
• Are examples well integrated into the essay?
• How fluent, varied and accurate is your language?
• How appropriate is your use of register and style - your selection of vocabulary, structures, tone etc?
