Zero, first, second and third
conditional
Zero conditional
• Permanent truths, scientific facts and general habits
• If + present simple, . . . present simple.
• Examples:
If you heat water to 100 C, it boils.
If you eat a lot, you put on weight.
If I’m tired, I go to bed early

First conditional
• Realistic situation in the present or future.
• Structure:

• Examples:
If you’re free later, we can go for a walk.
If they’re hungry, I’ll make some sandwiches.
• Unless = only if / except; used only with present simple
• Examples:
Unless you hurry up, you won’t catch the bus.
We’ll stay at home unless the weather improves.
Second conditional
• Imaginary / improbable present or future
situations and their consequences
• Structure:

• Examples:
If she saw a snake, she’d be terrified.
What would you do if you were offered a job in Canada?
• ”If I were you . . .”
If I were you, I’d ask for help.
Third conditional
• Impossible situations and regrets in the past.
• Structure:

• Examples:
If we had left earlier, we would have arrived on time.
You could have helped me if you had stayed later.

provided/providing, in case
As long as
Expresses a condition, to say that something will happen only on
condition that something else happens:
I’ll give you the book as long as you promise to give it
back next week.
Expresses that one thing depends on another:
You can go to the party as long as you come back before
midnight.
The same meaning as if something is provided / providing:
We’re going skiing next week if / provided / providing
there is snow.
