In a narrative there are six intrinsic elements, which is:

A. CHARACTER
A character is a person or other being in a narrative.
The characters appear in the latter story is:
1. I (The Dad)
2. André (The Chihuahua)
3. Abby (The Dad’s Daughter)

There are also a character appears in the old Western


TV shows, that being watched by The Dad named
“Little Joe”.
A. CHARACTER
After The Dad fell asleep, he dreamt of being an
outlaw in a western world, so there are also characters
from The Dad’s dream, which is:
1. Me (The Dad / The Outlaw)
2. The Local Farmer
3. The Local Farmer’s Daughter
4. The John Wayne look-alike guy
5. The two little punk
B. Setting
A setting is the time and geographic location within a
narrative.

The location Setting of the latter story is inside a home


in front of TV and the Dad’s bed. The time setting is
last Saturday evening, and later in the night.

There are also Location setting in The Dad’s dream, it


is inside a saloon sometime somewhere in a western
C. Plot
Plot is the sequence of events in which each event
affects the next one through the principle of cause-and-
effect.

The narrative technique of the latter story using Plot


Story within a Story, which means a story is being told
within another story.

This can be seen in the Dad’s dream where he become

Climax : The Dad/The Outlaw quarrel in the saloon.
Return or Fall : The Dad hear André whining on the
floor at the foot of the bed.
Catastrophe : The Dad realize what he has done.
D. Point of View
The latter story use a first-person point of view.

A first-person point of view reveals the story through


an openly self-referential and participating narrator.
First person creates a close relationship between the
narrator and reader, by referring to the viewpoint
character with first person pronouns like I and me.
E. Theme
A theme is a central topic, subject, or message within a
narrative.

There is two theme in the latter story. The first is about


the responsibility of a father taking care of his
daughter’s pet, beside he himself has a bit “dislike”
feeling towards it.

The second theme is about a quarrel inside a western

Tone is the use of pitch in language to distinguish
lexical or grammatical meaning – that is, to distinguish
or to inflect words.

The Dad is using calm and resolute tone when he


speaks to his daughter. – "But he's not sleeping with
me,"

When The Dad fell asleep and become an outlaw in his
