THE FALKLAND OR MALVINAS ISLANDS are very isolated and many people find there
is very little to do when they are not on duty. Sports and leisure activities become very
important and Mount Pleasant Airfield has some of the best facilities available. Just
four miles away from Mount Pleasant Airfield is Gull Island Pond Water Sports Centre.
This is supervised by the Physical Education Officer and the Adventure Training
Instructor and includes changing rooms, complete with showers, and rest room with
teaching and cooking facilities. There is usually plenty of equipment for everyone,
including wetsuits. Then there is a Joint Service Adventure Training Centre at Hillside
Camp in Stanley, the main town in the Falklands. This is where most servicemen spend
their free time, whether they prefer riding their bike or hiking round the area, or just
relaxing at the leisure centre.

5. Apart from the water sports installations, where do most servicemen go for R & R?
