HPE SOLUTION BACKGROUND
• HPE OneView for VMware vCenter (OV4VC) 10.1 has a
VMware vCenter
new component to support the VMware vLCM feature
• HPE OneView HPE Hardware Support Manager (HSM) VMware
ESXi
plug-in for VMware vLCM updates
VMware vLCM HPE OV4VC with
• The OV4VC HSM coordinates with VMware vLCM and HPE OneView HSM

HPE OneView
HPE Servers
• Sets baselines Gen10
• Performs component validation
• HPE driver and
Performs compliance checks firmware updates
• Performs updates
• vLCM should be used as the single source of truth for
HPE OneView/
updates, otherwise vLCM will signal configuration drift Synergy Composer SPPs
• Don’t use other tools outside of vLCM to update hosts

HPE ONEVIEW HARDWARE SUPPORT MANAGER FOR VMWARE
VLCM as part of HPE OneView for VMware vCenter (OV4VC)
Delivered

• Simplified “one click” lifecycle management for ESXi,

HPE drivers and firmware, directly from the vSphere UI
• Consistent and repeatable method results in more efficient
upgrades, improved reliability and performance, and easier
overall maintenance
• Supports any HPE Gen 10 server that is certified for ESXi
7.0 and has its firmware managed by HPE OneView
• This includes HPE Synergy, ProLiant BL, and ProLiant DL
servers
• One instance of OV4VC with HPE OneView HSM can
support multiple vCenters/vLCM and HPE
OneView/Synergy Composer instances
• Supports an external repository for the HPE Support Pack
for ProLiant (SPP), reducing storage requirements and
management overhead

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 13

ONLY
WHAT IS THE HPE ONEVIEW HARDWARE SUPPORT MANAGER
(HSM)?
• HPE OneView Hardware Support Manager (HSM) plug-in for vLCM is a fully integrated module
in OV4VC 10.1
• The OV4VC HSM module cannot be installed separately
• OV4VC HSM allows users to update server firmware and drivers in the same maintenance window
as the ESXi OS updates
• Manages the firmware and driver updates that are accessed by vLCM
• Does not upgrade HPE Synergy Composer or Image Streamer
• Does not upgrade HPE Synergy infrastructure (e.g. interconnect modules)
• Only updates server drivers and firmware

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 14

ONLY
WHAT IS A VLCM CLUSTER IMAGE?
• vLCM desired state image consists of the following elements:
• ESXI Version (required)
• Vendor Add-on (optional)
• Firmware and Drivers Add-on (optional)
• ESXi Version: The base image of VMware ESXi Server and additional components such as drivers and
adapters that are necessary to bring up a server
• vLCM requires the VMware ESXi base image, not the HPE Custom ESXi image
– Initial OS install can be with HPE image, but updates via vLCM require VMware image + HPE Customization addon
• Vendor Add-on: A vendor add-on is a collection of software components for the ESXi hosts that OEMs
create and distribute
• For HPE this is called the HPE Customization for HPE Servers or HPE Customization for HPE Synergy Servers
• Firmware and Drivers Add-on: The firmware and drivers add-on is a special type of vendor add-on
designed to assist in the firmware update process
• For HPE, this uses either the VMware Upgrade Pack (VUP) or Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP)
– Custom image and SPP mapping documents at https://vibsdepot.hpe.com/ (non-Synergy)
– Coming soon - HPE Recommended VMware LifeCycle Manager Desired Image Definitions

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 15

ONLY
USING SPP VS. VUP
• When do I use the SPP, and when do I use the VUP?
• What’s the difference?
• The SPP is the standard Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP)
• A VUP is a special version of the SPP that only contains firmware and VMware drivers
– VUP is usually created when new VMware components are released that are not yet supported with the current SPP
– VUP tends to be more up to date than the SPP
• The table below shows the initial supported upgrades

Starting OS Ending OS
Starting SPP version Ending SPP version Comments
version version
ESXi 7.0 ESXi 7.0 SPP 2020.03.2 VUP 1.1(A) SPP upgrade only
ESXi 7.0 ESXi 7.0 u1 VUP 1.1(A) VUP 1.2 ESXi and SPP upgrade
ESXi 7.0 u1 ESXi 7.0 u1 VUP1.1(A) VUP1.2 SPP upgrade only
HPE Synergy Custom HPE Synergy Custom SPP upgrade only
ESXi 7.0 ESXi 7.0
SPP 2020.05 SPP 2020.07.01

• Can I use a Custom SPP?

• Not today. There is a manifest file required in the SPP that coordinates the contents of the SPP with vLCM
– Custom SPPs will require unique manifest files
– This is being investigated for a future enhancement

• HPE OneView Server Profile Template configuration
• Add OV4vC SSL Certificate to vCenter
• Register VUP/SPP with vLCM

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 18

ONLY
HPE ONEVIEW VLCM SOLUTION – PREREQUISITES
• Software requirements
• HPE OneView 5.3 or later
• OV4VC 10.1 or later
• vSphere 7.0 or later
• ESXi 7.0 or later, with iSUT installed and configured with “AutoDeploy” Mode
– iSUT is preinstalled by default on the HPE OEM image

• Firmware baseline configured in HPE OneView Server Profile Template
• External SPP repositories are supported

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 19

ONLY
SERVER PROFILE TEMPLATE SETTINGS
• Best practice is to create a dedicated HPE OneView Server Profile Template (SPT) for each cluster
and update the baseline in the SPT before triggering the update from VMware vSphere Lifecycle
Manager
• Firmware baseline can be set in the SPT before or after the firmware upgrade using VMware
vSphere Lifecycle Manager
• Setting the baseline before the upgrade minimizes the consistency alerts
• To turn off the consistency alerts in the SPT when the SPT is shared across the clusters, select the
Not Checked option from the Consistency checking drop-down in Firmware section of the SPT
• This action can be done only for the Firmware section. By turning off the consistency check in the
Firmware section, all the other consistency checks will be performed as usual
• HPE OneView HSM updates the HPE OneView Server Profile during remediation, not the Server Profile
Template

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 20

ONLY
SERVER PROFILE TEMPLATE SETTINGS
• Set SPT for:
• Firmware only using Smart Update Tools
• Activate immediately
• Drivers from SPP/VUP are installed via
vLCM and not via HPE OneView
• Only firmware is updated using HPE
OneView
• HPE OneView HSM makes these
changes to the Server Profile during the
vLCM process

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 21

ONLY
CERTIFICATE MANAGEMENT
• Add the HPE OneView for VMware vCenter trusted root
certificate to vCenter
• Connect to the OV4VC appliance using port 3512, not the
default port 80
• Run the vSphere Certificate Export Wizard to export and
then add the new certificate to Trusted Root Certificates

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 22

ONLY
CONFIGURING THE HPE ONEVIEW HSM PLUG-IN
• New HPE OneView for VMware
vCenter section in the Administration
Page in the vSphere client
• OneView Service Pack for ProLiant
(SPP) Management displays the SPPs
that are available for vLCM
• Register the SPP with the vLCM online
software depot to make it available for
SPP assignment later
• This enables the package to be visible
and usable for compliance checking and
remediation

CHECKING COMPLIANCE AGAINST A CLUSTER IMAGE
• Compliance check compares the
software on each host in the cluster
with the software specified in the
cluster image
• Also gives you information about
the impact that the remediate
operation will have on the host Host compliance summary
• For example, if remediation will cause
host reboot or if maintenance mode is
needed for the host

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 27

ONLY
RUN A REMEDIATION PRE-CHECK
• Perform a remediation pre-check to
ensure that cluster health is optimal
and that no problems occur during
the remediation of the cluster
• Remediation pre-check operation
includes extensive health checks to Host compliance check status

stable state and to ensure successful
remediation
• For vSAN clusters, the remediation
pre-check operation includes a
hardware compatibility check for
HBA controller

ONLY
PERFORMING REMEDIATION
• Review Remediation Impact pop-up
displays a summary of the hosts that will be
updated to make them compliant with the
cluster image
• The tasks window displays the status of the
different remediation tasks
• Hosts in a cluster are remediated
sequentially Host remediation summary
• Parallel remediation is not supported
• If the remediation for a single host in the
cluster fails, the remediation of the entire
cluster stops
• vLCM has global and cluster level
Remediation Settings to configure how
ESXi hosts and VMs behave before and
during the remediation
• E.g. Quick Boot, VM power state, migration,
maintenance mode failures, vSAN
compatibility issues, etc.

VCF Update Options

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 32

ONLY
VMWARE CLOUD FOUNDATION (VCF) UPDATE OPTIONS
• There are two update manager options for VCF 4.0/4.1 workload domains
• You select an update manager while creating a workload domain (cannot be changed after WLD creation)
• All clusters in the workload domain are managed by the selected update manager
• Option 1: vSphere Update Manager (VUM) automates the lifecycle management of your VCF
environment, but firmware updates are manual
– Example: Use HPE OneView for vRealize Orchestrator (OV4VRO) to perform cluster aware firmware updates when
using VUM
• Option 2: vLCM (vSphere Lifecycle Manager) automates the lifecycle management of your VCF
environment including firmware by using cluster images
– Use the HPE OneView Hardware Support Manager (HSM) that is integrated into HPE OneView for VMware
vCenter (OV4VC)
• Must use VUM for these (no vLCM support)
• Management domain
• Workload domain running Kubernetes

CONFIDENTIAL | AUTHORIZED HPE PARTNER USE 33

ONLY
USING VLCM WITH VCF
• SDDC Manager does not use vLCM directly
• A cluster image must be made available in
Cloud Foundation before it can be applied to
a Virtual Infrastructure (VI) workload
domain or cluster
• Two options for making cluster image
available
• Export a cluster image from vSphere 7.0 and
import it into SDDC Manager
• Extract and edit an image from an existing
vLCM-enabled workload domain cluster in
SDDC Manager
• VCF can share cluster images across multiple
cluster in the same WLD
• vSphere vLCM is one cluster image per cluster
