MEANING
Copyright is the exclusive right given by law for a certain term of years to an author,
composer etc. to print publish and sell copies of his original work.

Under the Indian Copyright Act, the term copyright refers to the exclusive right
given to the creator or owner of an original work to use, reproduce, distribute,
perform, or display the work or to create derivative works based on the original
work.The Act provides protection for a variety of works, including literary, dramatic,
musical, artistic, and cinematographic works, as well as sound recordings and
broadcasts.

PROCEDURE FOR
REGISTRATION
• Filling: Application to be made in Form IV along with
the requisite fee to the Office of Copyright, Delhi. The
Registrar issues a filling number filing date and filing
receipt.The applicant shall have to wait 30 days during
which anyone having objection can fill their objection.
If any objection is filled the Registrar within 30 days
should hear the parties and decide whether registration
could be granted or not.
• Examination: If not objection is filed, the registrar
shall examine the application and any further
information required shall be filed within 30 days .
• Registration: The registrar shall issue the copyright
registration certificate.

Conclusion – In deciding the issue, the Court noted that the first sub-section of

section 57(1) provides the author to restrain third parties. The second sub-section
provides the author the entitlement to claim damages by such a third party for any
distortion, mutilation, or their modifications to his work or any other action that
would be prejudicial to his honor or reputation. This provided the appellant of the
work would not exhaust the legal right to claim authorship over it.
