KINESIOLOGY

The word kinesiology is derived from the GREEK

terms “KINESIS” means “MOTION”. And
“LOGOS” means “KNOWLEDGE” or “TO
DISCOURSE” or “TO STUDY”.
Kinesiology, then, was originally defined as “THE
STUDY OF MOTION”.
PLANE
“Plane is an imaginary space or area through which the
movements take place. ”
Sagittal or
Anterio Posterior plane

Frontal or
Lateral plane

Horizontal or
Transverse plane
SAGITTAL PLANE
Sagittal plane is a vertical plane passes through the body from
front to back dividing it into right & left.
MOVEMENTS:- Flexion & Extension. ( Biceps curls, knee
Extensions, Sit-ups )
FRONTAL PLANE
Frontal plane is a vertical plane passes through the body from
side & side dividing it into anterior & posterior.
MOVEMENTS:- Abduction & Adduction movements.
( jumping jacks, Spinal lateral flexion.)
HORIZONTAL PLANE
Horizontal plane is a horizontal plane, which divides the body
into upper and lower halves.
MOVEMENTS:- Rotational movements. ( Pronation,
Supination & Spinal rotation. )
AXES
“Axes is an imaginary line around which
movement take place.”

FRONTAL AXIS

SAGITTAL AXIS

VERTICAL AXIS
FRONTAL AXIS
Frontal axis is an imaginary line passes horizontal from side
to side.
Frontal axis at a right angle to the sagittal plane of motion.
“ Z ” is the frontal axis.
SAGITTAL AXIS
Sagittal axis is an imaginary line passes horizontlly from front
to back.
Sagittal axis at a right angle to the frontal plane.
“X” is the sagittal axis.
VERTICAL AXIS
Vertical axis is an imaginary line parallel to line of gravity or
perpendicular to the ground.
Vertical axis at a right angle to the trasnsverse plane of the
motion.
“ Y ” is the vertical axis.
