Kurdistán

Manuela Ospina Garcés

Juan Esteban Paniagua
Do you
know where
Kurdistan is?
it´s right here
After WWI and the dissolution of the
Why is Ottoman Empire, Kurds were promised
liberties that were not fulfilled through the
kurdistan not Treaty of Sévres (Never came into force).
Some of these liberties recognized the right
on the map ? to self-determination of the nationalities of
the former empires, and included the
creation of a Kurdish state.

What happens
in all countries
Conflict in
turkey
• Turkey and the ottoman
empire
• The agreements of Sykes-
picot
• Turkish war of
Independence
•What happens with the USA
influence
•Operation Ankara
•Tukey sees Kurds as a
terrorists

What happens with
Iraq
• On one side, Iraq´s constitution
recognizes Kurdistan as an autonomous
region, it determines that its capital is
Erbil and empowers its regional
Parliament to pass laws.
• But on the other hand, Kurds have tried
to become and independent nation
from Iraq, (like in 2017 after their
victory against Dáresh) but the country
didn’t allow it and retook Kirkuk by
forcing the Kurds to retreat to their
initial positions.

What happens with
Iran

• In the history of the Kurdish

conflict in the Middle East, its
relationship with Iran has been
based on clashes between the
Iranian military and the Kurdish
PJAK guerrilla (created by
members of the PKK).
USA involved with Kurds
in Syria, friends for
convenience ?

• The Kurds have been very important

allies for the united states, for example
thanks for the YPJ helps on the war of
the terrorism of Syria against ISIS.
• YPJ ( Yekîneyên Parastina Jin ) is a military
organization that was established in
2012 as a Kurdish women´s brigade.
• The change of mandate in the united
states greatly influenced the decision to
abandon them.
• USA can´t help the Kurds in turkey,
because turkey is a member of the
OTAN.

(BBC NEWS, 2019)

Realistic From the beginning of the conflicts
some countries like turkey and the
USA they took advantage of them,

perspective
turkey wanted to impose itself like
a boss, and the united states only
used them for their convenience.
Idealistic perspective
• From all this conflict, there is a small part that can be considered idealistic: Iraq has been
the country that has granted the Kurds the most freedoms, but even though they are
considered as a region in the country, all these liberties come up to an end.
