Normal
Distribution
Normal Distributions
Also called as Gaussian Distribution.
The most important of all continuous
probability distribution.
Normal Curve
A bell-shaped curve and graph of normal
distribution.
It lies entirely above the horizontal axis.
It is symmetrical, unimodal, and
asymptotic to the horizontal axis.
There are many normal distributions. A normal
distribution is determined by two parameters: the
mean µ and the standard deviation σ. If the mean
µ is 0 and the standard deviation σ is 1, then the
normal distribution is a standard normal
distribution. The areas under this curve can be
found using the Areas Under the Standard
Normal Curve Table.
Areas Under the Normal
Curve
Areas under the standard normal curve
can be found using the Areas under the
Standard Normal Curve table below. These
areas are regions under the normal curve.
Steps in finding the area under the normal
curve given a z-value
1. Express the given z-value into a three-digit number.
2. Using the z-Table, find the first 2 digits on the first column.
3. Find the third digit on the first row on the right.
4. Read the area for probability at the intersection of the row
(first 2 digit number) and column (third digit number). The
value observed at the intersection indicates the area of the
given z-value.
Examples:
1. Find the area that corresponds to z = 2.
2. Find the area that corresponds to z = 1.45.
3. Find the area that corresponds to z = -1.03.
4. Find the area that corresponds to z = -2.22.
5. Find the area between z = 2.14 and z = -1.09.
6. Find the area between z = 1.04 and z = 1.09.
7. Find the area between z = -3.71 and z = -1.56
