Dr. Homi Bhabha was a private person, and not much is
known about his personal life. He was born into a wealthy
and influential Parsi family in Mumbai, India, in 1909. He
was the youngest of five children and was educated at
Elphinstone College and the Royal Institute of Science in
Bombay before going on to study at Cambridge University
in England.
Bhabha never married and did not have any children. He
was known for his passion for the arts and was a patron of
the Indian art world, supporting artists and writers through
his involvement in cultural institutions such as the
Progressive Artists' Group.
Tragically, Bhabha died in an airplane crash in 1966 while
traveling to Vienna to attend a meeting of the International
Atomic Energy Agency. His death was a great loss to the
scientific community in India and around the world.

LEGACY
After his death, the Atomic Energy Establishment at Mumbai was renamed as the Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre in his honour. In addition to being an able scientist and administrator, Bhabha was

of the most prominent scientists that India has ever had. Bhabha also encouraged research in
electronics, space science, radio astronomy and microbiology.

The famed radio telescope in Ooty, India was his initiative, and it became a reality in 1970. The Homi
Bhabha Fellowship Council has been giving Homi Bhabha Fellowships since 1967. Other noted
institutions in his name are the Homi Bhabha National Institute, an Indian deemed university and the
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai, India.
