CORE TEACHING OF

CHRISTIANITY
The central ternet of Christianity is the belief in Jesus as the Son of God and the Messiah
(Christ). Christians believe that Jesus, as the Messiah, was anointed by God as savior of humanity
and hold that Jesus coming was the fulfillment of messianic prophecies of the Old Testament
Christianity is the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Most followers of Christianity, called
Christians groups.

ROMAN CATHOLIC, PROTESTANT OR EASTERN OTHODOX. These groups have different beliefs about Jesus and
His teachings. But all consider Jesus central to their religion. Most Christians believe God sent Jesus into the
world as the Savior. Christianity teaches that humanity can achieve salvation through Jesus.
Christians see Jesus as continuous with the God of Judaism. A collection of Christian writings was added to the Jewish
scriptures known as the Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible. The Christians writing, called the New Testament, record the life
and teachings of Jesus. They also describe the development of the early church and explain what faith in Jesus means. The
Christians Bible includes both the Old and New Testament. Some Christians groups also accept as part of the Bible a collection
of writings called the Apocrypha.
The core message of Christianity is found in the Gospels, and summed up in John 3:16: For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not
perish but have eternal life.

There’s much more to living as a Christian than just believing that one piece of Scripture, but
that is the “Gospel (the good news) in a nutshell” as we would refer to it.
CORE ETHICAL TEACHING

Christians “ethics” refers to those moral norms that are seen to be distinctive to Christianity.

“Moral Norms” are those guidelines that help the Christians to reflect on his/her moral life and on what he/she should take in certain situations.

Christians “ethical teachings” are based on the belief that the human person is an image of God.
