What is personality?
Personality is the dynamic and
organized set of characteristics
possessed by a person that
uniquely influences his or her
cognitions, motivations, and
behaviours in various situations.
DEFINITION:

Personality is that which permits a


prediction of what a person will do in
a given situation.(R.B. Cattell, 1905-
1998).
PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORIES

Psychoanalytic theories of
personality view human behaviour
as a dynamic interaction between
the conscious and unconscious mind.
SIGMAND FREUD (1856-1939)

He was a physician and specialized in


neurology.
He developed psychoanalytic theory to
treat mental disorders.
To explore the unconsciousness.
FREUD’S STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY

He divided personality structure into three


parts.
1. Id
2. Ego
3. Super ego
To understand the dynamics of an
individual’s conflicts.
