Weight and Gravity

Weight
y

A 75 kg person jumps off the high dive at the pool. How much force is pulling the person down?
F = ma = 75 kg (-9.81 m/s2) = 736 N down

What is your mass in kilograms?

Divide your weight by 2.2

If you jumped off the high dive what is the magnitude of the force pulling you down?
F = ma = (100 kg) (-9.81 m/s2) = 981 N down

Weight
y

Why do you fall into the pool when you jump off the high dive?
Gravity!!! What does gravity do?
x Pulls you down.

When you stand next to the pool to watch your friends dive, is gravity pulling you down more, less, or the same amount as when you were in the air?
The same.

Weight
y

The amount of force that gravity pulls you down with when you are in the air is the same amount of force that gravity pulls you down with then you are on the ground. Weight = mass X acceleration due to gravity Fg = mg g = Fg / m

A 65 kg person falls from an airplane at a constant velocity. What is the magnitude of the force of air resistance?

Weight

An 80 kg person falls from an airplane and their parachute produces an upward force of 775 N. What is the acceleration of the person?

Normal Force
y

Remember!
y With how much force does gravity pull you down?
y 981 N for me.

y Does it matter whether you are falling or standing on the ground?

y

So, when you are standing gravity is still pulling you down with a strong force. WHY ARENT YOU ACCELERATING!?!?!?

Normal Force
y

You arent accelerating because the floor/ground is supporting your weight. If your acceleration equals zero, then how much net force could be acting on you? NONE! How must the upward force of the floor compare to the downward force of gravity? They are the same!

Normal Force

A 60 kg person rides in an elevator which is moving upward at a constant speed. For some reason, they are standing on a scale. How many newtons does the scale read?

Normal Force
y

The same 60 kg person is riding in an elevator again, still standing on a scale. However, this time the elevator is accelerating upward at a rate of 2.5 m/s2. How many newtons does the scale read?

Normal Force
y

Again, that 60 kg person is riding in an elevator standing on a scale, but this time the elevator is accelerating downward at a rate of 3.2 m/s2. How many newtons does the scale read?
