Cartagena de Indias
The Bolivar Square

The Bolívar Square, also known as Bolívar Park, is an urban square located in the historic center of
the Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias, capital of the Bolívar department.
This typical Spanish-style square, tinged with tropical vegetation, was the heart of Cartagena de
Indias during the Colony. It was called Inquisition Square until November 11, 1896 when the center
of the square was adorned with the statue of the Liberator Simon Bolívar in his honor. This urban
space is an emblematic site of the city, loaded with historical and cultural symbolism.

The square is surrounded by abundant vegetation, in fact it is one of the causes of its popularity, since
the historical center by its constitution does not have a great abundance of trees, in addition to the
vegetation in it pigeons abound as in most parks and squares of Cartagena, as well as several
fountains that enliven the environment and refresh this place even more.

Every night folk dance groups gather to entertain the audience with the traditional dances and songs
of the Colombian Caribbean coast, rhythms such as cumbia, mapale, currulao, bullerengue and others
are the protagonists of the nights of this iconic Cartagena square.

An interesting fact is that in a corner of the square you can see a Mortar, it is a piece of artillery from the 18th
century, which was found near the Saint Fernando Castle of Bocachica.
