The Binary Number System
There are 10 types of people in the
world…
Those who know binary…

Those who don't…

Lesson Objectives
- Understand the binary number system
- Understand why it is important in computing

Success Criteria Binary –

ALL: Will be able to read a binary number Base 2 number system
and work out its value
MOST: Will also understand why computers Denary-
use the binary number system Base 10 number
SOME: Will also be able to write a denary
system
number in binary
Starter
What is the value of this number?

10
ten But can also mean two
Our Number
System (Denary)
• Humans developed this number
system millions of years ago, as
they evolved, because humans
learnt to count using their hands
(ten digits).

• They would count up to ten, note

it down, then count up to ten
again.
How does it work?
In our number system, the number 10
10’s 1’s
means ‘ten’ because the digits mean ‘1 ten 1 0
and 0 ones’.
10’s 1’s
…the number 33 means ‘thirty three’ because
the digits mean ‘3 tens and 3 ones’. 3 3

…the number 528 means ‘five hundred and 100’s 10’s 1’s
twenty eight’ because the digits mean ‘5
5 2 8
hundreds, 2 tens and 8 ones’.

But our number system is not the only one out there!!
The Binary Number System
• Unlike humans, computers don’t have fingers and so
cannot count like us.
• Computers, being electronic, are simply made up of
switches, which are either open or closed. So a
computer only knows two states (open / closed)
• Computers count to two, then count to two again
and so on…
• And because of this, a computer can only recognise
two digits (0 and 1)…it doesn’t know anything else!
The Binary Number System
This is how we (like computers) count in binary
We count to 2…
Then we record it by placing a 1 in the 2s column…

…in binary the digits 10 means

2’s 1’s ‘the number two’ because the
1 0 digits mean ‘1 two and 0 ones’.

…the digits 1001 means ‘the

8’s 4’s 2’s 1’s number nine’ because the digits
mean ‘1 eight, 0 fours, 0 twos
1 0 0 1 and 1 one’.
Converting Binary to Denary

Does 8 fit into Does 2

Does 128 fit Does 32 fit
10? fit into
into 202? into 10?
2?

202 = 1 1 0 0 1 0 1 0

Does 64 fit into 74? Does 1

Does 16 fit into Does 4 fit
10? into 2? fit into
0?
Converting Denary to Binary

202 = 1 1 0 0 1 0 1 0

128
Check that it works: 64
8
+ 2
= 202
Assess your learning
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
