What is
Denotation? 
• Denotation refers to the literal
or dictionary definition of a
word or phrase, without any
added connotations or
meanings.
1st Example : Hamlet by
William Shakespear
• "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" - Act
1, Scene 4, Line 90
2nd example: Romeo and Julliet 
by William Shakespear 

• "But, soft! what light through yonder window
