VEGETABLES
HISTORY OF VEGETABLES

Itcomes from Old French, and was originally


applied to all plants; the word is still used in this
sense in biological context.it derives from Medieval
Latin vegetabilis “growing flourishing”(i.e. of a
plant), a semantic change from a Late Latin
meaning “to be enlivening, quickening”.
 VEGETABLES are plants that are consumed by humans or other animals as food. The
original meaning is still commonly used is applied to plants collectively to refer to all
edible plant matter, including the flowers, fruits, stems, leaves, roots, and seeds.
What is Vegetables?

In common usage, the term vegetable usually


refers to the edible portions of certain
herbaceous plants. These plant parts are
either eaten fresh or prepared in several
ways.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF VEGETABLES

 Vegetables are classified according to the part, or parts, of the plant that is eaten. Many
vegetables fit into more than one category if various parts are edible.
These are the 8 classifications of vegetables:
1. Bulbs- onions, garlic
2. Stems- celery, rhubarb
3. Roots & Tubers- carrots, beets
4. Leaves- kale, lettuce
5. Flowers- cauliflower, broccoli
6. Fruits- tomato, cucumber
7. Seeds & Pods- peas, edamame
8. Fungi- mushrooms, truffles
DIFFERENTIATE OF VEGETABLES

Bonatically, fruits and vegetables are classified depending on which part of the plant they came from. A
fruit develops from the flower of a plant, while the other parts of the plant are categorized as vegetables.
Fruits contain seeds, while vegetables can consists of roots, stems and leaves.
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANT OF
VEGETABLES??
 Vegetables and fruits are an important part of a healthy diet, and variety is as important as quantity.
 No single fruit or vegetable provides all of the nutrients you need to be healthy. Eat plenty everyday.
 A diet rich vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent
some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar,
which can help keep appetite in check.
