• It has been over 4 months since the worst floods in decades swept
Pakistan, but families continue to suffer as they endure the devastating
consequences.
• Long-lasting and heavy monsoon rains since June have claimed more than
1,700 lives in large parts of Pakistan. Over 2.2 million people have lost
their homes, nearly 13,000 have been injured in the disaster..
Over 33 million people affected

• The hardest hit areas are Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber


Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Punjab, with 1 in 7 people in
Pakistan affected by the historic disaster.
• The humanitarian situation continues to be extremely
difficult for millions of people, with many more families
expected to be pushed to the brink of survival as the
disaster continues to unfold.
• Essential infrastructure has also been heavily
affected, with the knock-on consequences making it
difficult for humanitarian organisations to reach
affected areas.
• More than 13,000 kilometres of roads have been
damaged with 400 bridges destroyed.
• The total cost of the damage so far is expected be
well over $30 billion.
Responses
National:
• The prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, who had decided to spearhead
the relief operation in the wake of massive floods, met international
partners on 25 August who pledged to provide $500 million to the
country to mitigate the havoc wreaked by flooding.
Army officers, federal cabinet members, and senators donated their
one-month salary for the flood relief fund. PTCL Group Pakistan's
largest telecom and internet services provider, announced ₨. 1.75
billion(or US$8 million) to support flood relief efforts and those
affected by the floods.
• The chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party
and former prime minister, Imran Khan, held a 3-hour-
long telethon to raise funds for flood victims and
received ₨. 500 crores (or US$22.5 million) in pledges for
flood relief.
• On 30 August, the Government of Pakistan announced
$170 million allocation to flood victims, which will be
disbursed through the Benazir Income Support
Programme (BISP) as part of Pakistan Flood Response
Plan 2022.The Pakistani embassies in China and Turkey
have also set up fundraisers requesting flood relief
donations from locals.
Relief Efforts by Armed Forces of Pakistan

• Whenever the nation of Pakistan faces a challenge, it can


count on its armed, naval and air forces to support it to
their fullest capability. This remains true for the current
flood situation, which has wreaked havoc through all
provinces of the country and taken more than 1700 lives.
The Pakistan Army, Navy and Air Force are all actively
participating in flood relief efforts, fulfilling their duty of
service.
• Both the army and the air force have established relief
funds for the victims of the flooding, named “Army Relief
Fund for Flood Affectees” and “Pakistan Air Force Flood
Relief Fund”.
Internationaly
• The World Bank allocated $370 million in relief aid to
Pakistan
• The World Health Organization allocated $10 million to
emergency health relief efforts.
• The United Nations has allocated $3 million from
its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help the
affected areas.
• And mainy other countries announced pakages to
Pakistan to overcome challenges caused by flooding.
