Elements of Art
Chapter 2 – Art in Focus
{ 2021
What is the design?
Everything we do includes a set of designs
How do we get to know the innovative design?
Innovative work is what achieves something new, and this is a
superficial part that stems from a deeper part where the creator uses all
his imagination, knowledge and skill in creating what meets the
needs, so all things are like Houses, clothes, cities, roads, tools,
machines, etc. have been created as a result of our need for them.
This applies to composing a piece of music, making a picture, writing
an author, a story, or poetry, and our interest here is to form a picture.
How do we judge whether this design played its role or not?
We always need bases to make reasonable judgments.
Ex: of a chair design (necessity - shape - material -
implemented machines)

-The Point (dot) -Texture

-The line -The mass
-The area(shape) -The space
The form -The color
The value -The volume
Time/Motion
The Point (dot)
Definition and use:

 The simplest design elements.

 Change the state of the space.

 It is just a point, and it is the beginning of the artist

placing the first mark on the work surface.

 Small shape but attracts the eye.

 We can see it at the focus point of the camera.

 It can also be a grain of wheat or a star in the sky.

 Or a bright window at night.

 A bird on a tree branch.

 Or placed in the musical notes to make a pause.

Point forms
The ideal shape of a point is the small
circle It can be square or triangular Or of
unspecified organic form or star as
mentioned
The point in composition

-Each point is a fixed world in its place

-When repeated, movement occurs in the design
-Such a fixed unit of measurement can occur ... ... ... ...
 With increased movement . ... ... .... .....

 Reverse force movement .. ..... ........ .

The line
 There are invisible lines that appear to connect the points
 The point is the easiest element to understand, but the line is
the easiest to follow
 The line can be seen in the tree branch facing the sky
 An ascending plant from the ground
 Signs of curved lines on the sand mountains in the desert
 There are circular lines as a result of a stone falling in the water
 From this we find that the point is given a position while the
line is given a direction
 A straight line or a curve draws for our eyes a path of motion
 The flying arrow, impulsive $‫ع‬$‫مندف‬bird is given a line
 The line is used to draw perspective lines
 Straight lines contrast with broken or angled lines
 Even when we think we follow one line
 Calligraphy had an important role in Japanese art and writing
Types of straight lines

 A straight line parallel to the horizon line, given a

horizontal line or a state of‫وازن‬$$‫ت‬equilibrium
 When it moves and becomes vertical it gives a state

of ascending or descending or a certain length

 When it is‫ مائلة‬tilted at an angle from the horizon, it is

given a state of action and imbalance

Types of lines

 There is a curve line that appears in the ocean waves

 It is an advanced movement and a movement to push the

other
 It can be repeated ‫متاخم‬contiguously in trees and varied

between thick and thin

Types of lines

 The zigzag line, for example, is seen in lightning, and it is made

up of several straight oblique ‫مائلة‬lines
 There is the non-directional line

 The line carries in its movement the state of the expressed expression of

the element, the line has a complete language of expression

 The lines lead our eyes in the directions determined by the artist

The area(shape)

 The point is given a position, and the line is

given a direction, but when we move the line
in a curved or refracted shape until it meets
again it gives an area
Exercise required

Using paper grades between

white and black, i.e. gray scale,
do an experiment to design

{ relationships between point,

line, and area, on Canson paper
or white or gray Fibriano paper
with an area of 50 x 70 cm, ..
taking into your art work the
method of implementation and
fixing.
