Background
Most electric motors have a lifespan of 30 000 to 40 000 hours [1]. However, the lifespan of a motor is
Largely affected by factors such as the quality of maintenance and environmental conditions.
Literature Review
The common causes of frequent pump motor failure are given below:
• Electric overload. When the motor operates with a current exceeding the rated current. When a motor starts the current
is usually 3-5 times the design current and so overload can significantly damage the circuit[1].
• The motor operates in a damp environment. When selecting a pump for a given application, waterproof and moisture
proof considerations of the motor must be taken[2].
• Mechanical failure causing the motor to be overloaded and the current too large.[2]
• Low resistance. This is caused by the degradation of the insulation windings arising from corrosion , physical damage or
overheating[1]
• Contamination. When foreign object creep into the motor, this can lead to the damage of raceways., bearing balls and
fans resulting in overheating and failure[1].
• Vibration usually results in misalignment and eventual failure of the motor.[1]
