The Ibálong, also known as Handiong or Handyong, is a 60-stanza fragment of a

Bicolano full-length folk epic of the Bicol region of the Philippines, based on the
Indian Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The epic is said to have been
narrated in verse form by a native poet called Kadunung.

What is the purpose of Ibalong epic?

The epic depicts the transition of the ancient Bicolanos from the hunting stage
to the agricultural stage, from the nomadic state to the settled life. The Ibalong
teaches about courage, of how a simple act can bring about positive change.
