A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SELECTED PHIPPINE FESTIVAL

I – INTRODUCTION
Philippine festivals are town fiestas celebrating moments in history that
defined identity, polity and locality. Celebration of the arts and culture,to albeit
made central to these festivities, only comes as a texture instead of text in the
whole exercise of the Festival. This articulation of the festival differs entirely from
the European frame borrowed from Bernard Faivre D’Arcier (former Director of the
Avignon Festival) that “the true role of the festival is for artists to dare, to engage in
new projects”. Despite the cultural divides of eastern and western thoughts,
Philippine festivals are still festivals nonetheless.

The Philippines has so many festivals: there are town fiestas celebrating
foundation days, patron saints and a combination of both. These festivals are
occasions when and where people converge, the same occasions when Government
units and the private sector become generous with funds. Fiestas become
important avenues for artistic engagement. As artistic ventures especially in
the Philippine countryside are always wanting in venues and avenues for artistic
engagement, it is in these convergences that the artists find their audience.

A festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centering
on some characteristic aspect of that community and its religion or cultures. It is
often marked as a local or national holiday, mela, or eid. A festival constitutes
typical cases of glocalization, as well as the high culture-low culture
interrelationship.
These often serve to fulfil specific communal purposes, especially in
regard to commemoration or thanking to the gods, goddesses or saints: they're
called patronal festivals. They may also provide entertainment, which was
particularly important to local communities before the advent of mass-produced
entertainment. Festivals that focus on cultural or ethnic topics also seek to inform
community members of their traditions; the involvement of elders sharing stories
and experience provides a means for unity among families.
These are some of the Phillipine Festival.

1. Sinulog Festival

The word Sinulog comes from the Cebuano

adverb sulog which is “like water current
movement,” which describes the forward-
backward movement of the Sinulog dance.
The dance consists of two steps forward
and one step backward, done to the sound
of drums. The dance is categorized into
Sinulog-base, Free-Interpretation. Candle
vendors at the Basilica continue to perform
the traditional version of the dance when
lighting a candle for the customer,

The Sinulog dance steps were
believed to originate from Rajah Humabon’s adviser, Baladhay. Up to this day, the
two-steps forward, and the one-step backward movement dance is still used by the
Santo Niño devotees believing that it was the Santo Niño’s choice to have Baladhay
dance.

Sinulog is dubbed Cebu’s grandest festival. Attracting tourist around the

globe annually. The Sinulog is an annual festival held on the third Sunday of
January in Cebu City, Philippines. The festival honors the vision of the child Jesus,
known as the Santo Niño (Holy Child),who used to be the patron Saint of the City of

The Ati-Atihan Festival is a Philippine festival held annually in January in

honor of the Santo Niño (Holy Child or Infant Jesus) in several towns of the
province of Aklan, Panay Island. The biggest celebration is held during the third
Sunday of January in the town of Kalibo, the province’s capital. The name Ati-
Atihan means "to imitate Ati", the local name of the Aeta people, the first settlers
of Panay Island and other parts of the archipelago.

The festivity was originally a pagan celebration to commemorate the Barter of

Panay, where the Aeta accepted gifts from Bornean chieftains called Datu, who fled
with their families to escape a tyrannical ruler, in exchange for being allowed to
dwell in the Aeta’s lands. They celebrated with dancing and music, with the
Borneans having painted their bodies with soot to show their gratefulness and
camaraderie with the Aeta who had dark skin. Later on, the festivity was given a
different meaning by the church by celebrating the acceptance of Christianity, as
symbolized by carrying an image of the Holy Child or Infant Jesus during the
procession.

The Dinagyang Festival is a famous and religious and cultural

festival in Iloilo City, Philippines held on the 4th Sunday of January, or right after
the Sinulog in Cebu and the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo, Aklan. Dinagyang was
also voted as the Best Tourism event three times in a row among any other festivals
in the Philippines. Dinagyang is a Hiligaynon word that means “merrymaking.”
It is also the most awarded festival in the country because of its legacy, popularity,
and innovation. Dinagyang received honors and regarded as a World Class Festival
and dubbed as the "Queen of all festivals" in the Philippines.
The main part of the festival which is the Ati Tribe competition consists of a
number of "warrior" dancers (who hold a shield in one hand and a spear in another)
in a tribe (locally called "tribu") dancing in a choreographed formation and patterns
as well as chanting to the sound of loud drum beats and improvised percussion
instruments innovated by the respective tribes.

The Pahiyas Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth of May every year in the
Town of Lucban, Quezon. This celebration is held in order to express gratitude to
the patron saint of farmers, Saint Isidore the Laborer, for a year of bountiful
harvest, which in Filipino is ani.

During this festival, the people of Lucban adorn their homes with decorations
made of fruits, vegetables, handicrafts, and kiping, or rice wafers. After the festival,
the locals usually share these decorative fruits and vegetables amongst themselves.
The Pahiyas Festival is said to have begun as a simple ritual for thanksgiving to the
idols, or in Filipino anito, for a bountiful harvest. However, when Catholicism
spread throughout the Philippines, this recipient of this festival's graces became
the patron saint of farmers, Saint Isidore the Laborer. According to legend, while
Saint Isidore the Laborer was praying, a white carabao and an angel helped to plow
his fields.

Panagbenga Festival (transl. Flower Festival) is a month-long annual

flower occasion in Baguio. The term is of Kankanaey origin, meaning "season of
blooming".[1] The festival, held in February, was created as a tribute to the city's
flowers and as a way to rise up from the devastation of the 1990 Luzon earthquake.
[2] The festival includes floats that are covered mostly with flowers not unlike those
used in Pasadena's Rose Parade. The festival also includes street dancing,
presented by dancers clad in flower-inspired costumes, that is inspired by the
Bendian an Ibaloi dance of celebration that came from the Cordilleras.

The month-long festival starts at the 1st day of the month, with an opening
activities organized by the City government and private sectors. Many activities
were also celebrated on the duration of the month. But the most crowd-generating
events were in the last week of the festival, the Street Dancing and Float Parade,
after it, Session Road was closed for a week for exhibits. Simulcast, Wright Park
honors their pony boys and horse trainers. Closing ceremonies were at the night of
the last day of the fest.
