the products right for them. When a customer visits Purplle’s app or website, it pops up a
questionnaire to understand the user’s needs, by asking about skin tone, type, and specific

browsing history but by the customer’s traits.

• The Purplle brand of cosmetics started its journey as a D2C beauty products
retailer brandishing its eCommerce website and app in 2011. The company, much
like other market leaders including Flipkart, Amazon, Nykaa, etc., has also forayed
into the private label space. Purplle entered the private label space by subsuming
the in-house brand StayQuirky, which was launched in 2015.
• Purplle is a beauty and cosmetics D2C eCommerce brands that derives its revenues
mainly from product commissions and marketplace fees. Furthermore, a major
chunk of its revenues also come from the advertisements on its app as well as on
the website.

INVESTMENT AND VALUATION RAISE

• Purplle, an online beauty store, has raised $45 million (about Rs 326 crore) from Sequoia
Capital India and existing investors Verlinvest, Blume Ventures, and JSW Ventures, the
company said in a release. The round saw the company’s value rise to Rs 2,200 crore,
sources said.
• This partial exit has helped the fund generate 1.35 times its entire Fund 1 value of Rs 240
crore, which it raised in 2013 from various domestic financial institutions. These included
large banks, insurance companies, the Small Industries Development Bank of India, and the
IIT Alumni Trust. It then raised a fund of Rs 535 crore in 2018 and invested in follow-on
rounds in Purplle from its second fund too.
