Characteristic of Quantitative Research

• Positivism and Realism

Positivism - an episteological position that advocates the applicationof the methods of
the natural sciences to the study of social reality and beyond (Bryman2008,697).
Realism-an epistemological position that acknowledges a reality independent of the senses that is
accessible to the researcher’s tools and theoretical speculations.

• Numerical description
-refers to frequency distribution, percentage, and measures of central tendencies like mode,median,
and mean.

• Casual explanation
- relates to the meaning of causality,which refers to a concerns with establishing causal connections
rather than mere relationship.
Characteristic of Quantitative Research

• Prediction
-is a statement about the future.
• Nature of Social Reality
-refers to “What can be known and how”
Example:
Is the social world continually being constructed through human perspectives.
• Experimental/Manipulative
- refers to a type of quantitative research where the researcherd manipulated one variable and
control/ randomize the rest of the variable.

• Empirical examination
-is generally referred to as information that is derived through observation or experiment.

• Measurements
-produce for assigning symbols, letters or numbers to empirical properties.
Characteristic of Quantitative Research

• Hypothesis testing
-is an informed speculation, which is set up to be tested,about the possible relationship between two
or more variables.
• Randomization
-is related to random assignment, a term used in connection with experiment, a term used in to the random
allocation of a research partcipants to the experimental group and the control group.

• Research protocol
- is the sequence of manipulations and measurement procedures that make up the experiment.

• Quesionnaire
- A questionnaire is a collection of questions administered to respondents.

• Deductive approach/ testing of theory

- approach to the relationship between theory and research in which the latter is conducted with referred fromthe
former.
