The Baltic sea

The Baltic sea is:

• an inland sea =morze śródlądowe
• not very deep= shallow, about 52 m deep on
average ( the deepest at 459 m Landsort depth)
• bigger than Poland -415 000 square kilometers
(Poland 312 679 square kilometers)
• a shelf sea = morze szelfowe
• connected with about 250 sweet water rivers
• not very salty-its salinity (zasolenie) is about
7,5%
• quite cold-0-2 degrees in winter, 13-22 degrees in
summer
The coastline-very diversified
The coastline.The Balctic sea:
• has islands (the biggest one-Zealand; the polish
ones- Wolin and a part of Usedom)
• has peninsulas like Hel Peninsula or Vistula Spit
• has gulfs like the Gulf of Finland or
the Gulf of Bothnia
• in the south it’s flat and sandy with some cliffs
• in the north it’s rocky called skerry
(szerowe/szkierowe)
Hel Peninsula
• Peninsulas, also called spits –landforms
(mierzeje) are a result of the

CREATIVE
activity
of the sea
Skerry coasts or cliffs
are created by the

DESTRUCTIVE ACTIVITY
called

ABRASION
TEMPERATURE
The Baltic sea is cold :
• in summer – 18-22 degrees in the
south
-13 degrees in the north
• in winter – 0-2 degrees
• The Gulf of Bothnia freezes in winter
SALINITY -zasolenie

LOW 7,5 ‰.
The Baltic Sea is actually the sweetest
of all sea in the world.
WHY???
Average ocean - 35 ‰ by
the way
• NOT ENOUGH salt water from the Atlantic
ocean through the North Sea due to narrow
straits (cieśniny)
• LOTS OF SWEET WATER from the rivers
• LOW EVAPORATION (parowanie) because the
sea is cold
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
POLLUTION-zanieczyszczenie
• From rivers –nitrogen and phosphorus from
farmfields
• Municipal wastewater and industrial
wastewater=sewage
• Oil spills
• EUTROPHICATION –the growth of
PHYTOPLANKTON (fitoplankton,zielenice)
BUT
DESPITE ALL THE POLLUTION
People love our sea 
