Objective: To compare things, people and places at the grocery store using comparative adjectives.
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

COMPARATIVE
ADJECTIVES

We use them to compare things, places and people.

1. When the adjective has only one syllable.

Cheap – cheaper / tall – taller / big – bigger

There are 3 rules 2. When the adjective has two syllables and ends with “y”

Heavy – heavier / happy – happier / pretty - prettier

3. When the adjective has more than two syllables

Beautiful – more beautiful / expensive – more expensive

⮚ We change the y for an i: heavy – heavier / happy – happier / pretty – prettier

Ex: Sarah’s bags are heavier than Emma’s bags. 5

2. When the adjective has two syllables and ends with “y” Emma Sarah

⮚ We add er: cheap – cheaper / tall – taller / big – bigger.


Ex: The red wine is cheaper than the white wine.

3. When the adjective has more than two syllables 6

⮚ We add more before the adjective: beautiful – more beautiful / expensive – more
expensive

Ex: Water is more expensive than soda.
