Comparative Adjectives

1. We use a comparative adjective + than + the second item to compare two


people, animals, groups or things.

 My father is older than my mother.


 Athens is older than London.
 Giraffes are taller than elephants.

2. Less is the opposite of more and we can use it with an adjective to compare two
people, animals, groups or things.

 The English are less friendly than the Greeks.


 It is less hot in June than in July.

3. We use as + adjective + as to talk about people, animals or things which are equal in
some way.

 Steve is as clever as his brother.


 Horses are as beautiful as swans.

4. We use not as (so) + adjective + as for the negative.

 Steve is not as rich as his brother.


 Steve is not so old as his brother.
