Comparative and Superlative

Ex. Which river is longer, the Nile or the Amazon? The Nile is longer than the Amazon.

Which river is the longest in the world? The Nile is the longest river in the world.

Comparative
Adjective + er or more + than
We use the comparative to compare two people, places, or things.
John is taller than Maria.
Soccer is more popular than basketball.

If the adjective is small we use -er. Tall – taller


If the adjective is big we use more. Beautiful – more beautiful.

Superlative
Adjective + est or most
We use superlative to compare more than two people, places, or things.

John is the tallest in the class.


Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.

If the adjective is small we use -est. Big – biggest


If the adjective is big we use most. Expensive - most expensive.

Spelling
CVC – Constant, Vowel, Constant – Double the last letter
Ex. Big - Bigger – biggest

-dy – when the adjective ends with - dy, remove the y and add – ier or iest.
Ex. Busy – busier – busiest
