WHAT IS NATO

• The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949

WHAT WAS THE COLD WAR?

• The Cold War was an

ongoing political rivalry
between the United
States and the Soviet
Union and their
respective allies
that developed after
World War II
ROLE OF NATO IN COLD WAR

• Because NATO ground forces were smaller than those of the Warsaw Pact,
• the balance of power was maintained by superior weaponry, including
intermediate-range nuclear weapons.
• After the Warsaw Pact’s dissolution and the end of the cold war in 1991,
NATO withdrew its nuclear weapons and attempted to transform its mission.
• It involved itself in the Balkan conflict of the 1990s.
AFTER THE COLD WAR

After the cold war, NATO was reconceived as a “cooperative-

security” organization whose mandate was to include two
main objectives:
 to foster dialogue and cooperation with former adversaries and
 to “manage” conflicts in areas on the European peripheries, such as the Balkans.
