INTRODUCTION
A touch screen is a display that can detect the presence and

location of a touch within the display area.

The term generally refers to touch or contact to the display

of the device by a finger or hand.

HISTORY
Touch screens emerged from academic and corporate

research labs in the second half of the 1960s.

The HP-150 from 1983 was probably the world's earliest

commercial touch screen computer.

During the 1980s to the 2000s Touch screens made a huge

impact to computer interfaces all over the world.

It has great effect on POS systems and handheld devices.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Three components of touch screen are: Touch Sensor glass panel with a touch responsive surface. placed over a display screen to cover viewable area. Controller PC card that connects the touch sensor and the PC. takes information from the touch sensor . translates info into PC understandable form.

HOW DOES IT WORK?(contd.)

Software driver It is a software update for the PC system. allows the touch screen and computer to work together. helps the computers OS how to interpret the information.

TYPES OF TS TECHNOLOGY
Resistive Capacitive Interruptive

RESISTIVE TS TECHNOLOGY
Two conductive layers that connect when touched.
Not affected by dust or dirt on the screen. Capable of multi-touch. Good for outdoor use.

CAPACITIVE TS TECHNOLOGY
Conductive coating that emits an electric field.
Must be touched by something conductive. Also capable of multi-touch. Very durable.

INFRARED TS TECHNOLOGY
A grid of waves over the screen gets interrupted at a certain

point on the X axis and Y axis.

Very high clarity due to having no layers over the actual

screen.
Easily affected by dirt and

other interference.
Not capable of multitouch.

APPLICATIONS
Public Information Displays
Customer self-service Computer Based Training student registration systems financial and scientific applications

CONCLUSION
Touch screens have been around since the 60s.
Just recently a surge in popularity has occurred. Accuracy and intuitiveness continues to improve. They will definitely become more common.
