Introducation
 Concept by E. A. Johnson in 1965
 First product developed by CERN engineers namely Bent
Stumpe & Frank Beck in 1970
 A Touch screen is direct manipulation type of gesture
based technology.
 It is an electronic visual display capable of detecting and
locating a touch over its display area.
 It is the assembly of a touch panel as well as a display
device.
 Widely used in computers, user interactive machine,
Phone, tablets etc to replace the function of mouse &
keyboard.

Components
Touch screen panel consist of three main
component

 Touch sensors
 Controller
 Software Drive
Touch Sensors

 It’s a clear glass panel with a

touch responsive surface

 The sensor generally has an

electrical current or signal
going through it and
touching the screen causes a
change in the signal.
Controller

 The controller is a small PC

card that connects between
the touch sensor and the PC

 The controller determines

what type of
interface/connection you will
need on the PC
Software Drivers

 The driver is a software that allows the touch

screen and computer to work together

 It tells OS how to interact with the touch event

information that is sent from the controller.

 Most touch screen drivers today are a mouse-

emulation type driver
Working
 User interact with glass panel by
touching the sensor screen
 Electrostatic field generated by
touch
 Controllers scan the capacitive
touch and changes in the static
field.
 controller resolve the capacitive
changes to actual touch points.
 Software acts on the controller's
input
Types of Technology
 Resistive touch

 Capacitive touch

 Infrared touch

 Surface Acoustic wave touch (SAW)
