HISTORY
IT IS BELIEVED THAT E.A JOHNSON
INVENTED THIS TECHNOLOGY IN 1965.

IN 1971 Dr. SAMUEL HURST DEVELOPED

THE FIRST TOUCH SENSOR “ELOGRAPH”.
SENSORS AND DEVICES USED
TOUCH SENSOR: It detects the physical entity as input and
converts it into electrical format. It is placed above display
area where responsiveness can be created. There is a voltage
drop when it senses a touch.

CONTROLLERS : It is a hardware chip that supplies power to

touch screen. It’s a PC card that makes communication
between touch sensor and PC.

SOFTWARE DRIVER: It is the software which enable the touch

system to interact with PC. It accepts data from controller and
performs calculations to move cursor on display.
TYPES OF TOUCH SCREEN
THERE ARE FOUR TYPES OF SCREEN :-

1. RESISTIVE TOUCH SCREEN

2. CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREEN
3. INFRARED TOUCH SCREEN
4. SOUND ACOUSTIC WAVE
(SAW) TOUCH SCREEN
RESISTIVE TOUCH SCREEN
Resistive touch screen is touch
sensitive computer display
composed of two flexible sheets
coated with ITO (Indium tin
oxide) attached with controller.
Both the layers carries electric
current and when the upper layer
is pressed it touches the bottom
layer and suddenly electric field
increases and a touch is
detected.
CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREEN
A capacitive touch
screen panel consists
of glass plate coated
with transparent ITO.

There are thin hair like

electrodes in both vertical and
horizontal position which
forms many grids and when we
touches the screen the electric
current flows through our body
and sensor detects the touch .
INFRARED TOUCH SCREEN
 Infrared touch screen uses an
array of X-Y
infrared LED and photo
detector pairs around the
edges of the screen to detect a
disruption in the pattern of
LED beams

These LED beams cross each
other in vertical and
horizontal patterns. This helps
the sensors pick up the exact
location of the touch.
SAW TOUCH SCREEN
Surface acoustic wave (SAW)
technology
uses ultrasonic waves that
pass over the touchscreen
panel.

 When the panel is touched, a

portion of the wave is
absorbed. The change in
ultrasonic waves is processed
by the controller to determine
the position of the touch
event.
APPLICATIONS
Smart phones:
Whether it runs Android or iOS, nearly all smart phones have a
touch screen interface. Touch screens have become synonymous
with smart phones.
HMIs:
Another common application for touch screen technology is
human machine interfaces (HMIs).
POS:
Systems POS systems allow businesses to accept and process
payments from their customers.
Smart Appliances:
Smart appliances often have a touchscreen interface.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES :
Adoption to this environment is easy.
Easy to manage things for unknown users too.
Increased speed up work and time saving.
DISADVANTAGES :
Reducing of battery life as it requires more computing
power.
Should be careful as it’s not much exposure to dirt
environment.
Cost effective, as it requires for developing the
equipment.
GLITCHES
Glitches (GHOST TOUCH) are the term used when your
screen responds to the presses that you’re not actually
making.
REASON:- The touch screen responds when a conducting
body touches it. Now when some dirt or other
conducting material is present on the display.
CAUSES:-
1.Presence of water or dirt on the display.
2.Wrong voltage supply from the charger.
3.Sometimes because of use of tempered glass.
4.Due to overheating of the mobile phone.
5.Falling of mobile which damages digitizer
FUTURE SCOPE
The future of the touch screen Is Touchless.
A new patented technology developed by engineers at the
University of Cambridge accomplishes just that. They call this
technology “predictive touch”.
How Does the Touchless Touchscreen Technology Work?
This technology uses a kind of artificial intelligence called
machine intelligence. It predicts what the user intends to do and
follows through with the motion. This technology uses a gesture
tracker, vision-based or RF-based sensor, information on the
user, environmental conditions, and even uses an eye-gaze
tracker to determine what the user aims to do.
Air button technology, touchless touchscreens, or predictive
touch—whatever you want to call it, is an advancement in
technology much needed in the world right now.
