DRUGS

are chemicals that affect a person


in such a way as to bring about
physiological, emotional, or
behavioral change.
“DANGEROUS DRUGS”

are those chemicals that have high


tendency for abuse and dependency,
these substances may be organic or
synthetic, and pose harm to those
who use them.
TYPES OF DRUGS

ORGANIC DRUG: Marijuana
Marijuana

Marijuana is a mixture of the dried


and shredded leaves, stems, seeds and
flowers of the Cannabis sativa plant. The
mixture can be green, brown, or gray.

“pot”
“grass”
“weed”
“Mary Jane”
“damo”
“chongke”
Method of Use

The most common method


is smoking loose marijuana rolled
into a cigarette called a “joint” .
Short-term Effects

1. Makes them feel good / “high”


2. Loss of coordination
3. Affects memory, judgment and
perception.

Long-term effect: Brain damage


SYNTHETIC DRUG: Inhalants
Inhalants

Chemical vapors that people inhale


on purpose to get “high.”
(Ex : paints, glues, gasoline and
cleaning fluids )
Inhalants

Many people do not think of these products


as drugs because they were never meant to be
used to get "high." But when they are
intentionally inhaled to produce a “high,” they
can cause serious harm.
How are Inhalants used?

Inhalation of vapors through their


nose or mouth by sniffing or snorting
from containers or plastic bags.
Initial effects:

1. Immediately feels “high”


2. Slurred speech
3. Lack of coordination
4. Euphoria

How is Shabu used?
It is swallowed, snorted, injected, or smoked. “Crystal meth,” a
smokeable form of shabu, is a large, usually clear crystal that is
smoked in a glass pipe.
Short-term effects of Shabu

1. It makes a person more


awake and physically active
2. Higher risk getting HIV/AIDS or
hepatitis, if they share used
needles.
Long-term effects of Shabu

1. Violent behavior and


mood swings
2. Paranoia
3. Increase sex drive
4. “Meth mouth”
5. Severe weight loss
6. Problems with thinking, emotion,
and memory
Cigarettes (Tobacco)

A cigarette is a small
cylinder of finely cut
TOBACCO leaves rolled in thin paper for smoking.

Nicotine, the primary chemical in


tobacco and therefore cigarettes, is very addictive

years and older are currently smoking.

Second hand smoke (SHS)

When non-smokers are exposed to SHS, it’s


called involuntary smoking or passive smoking.
Non-smokers who breathe in SHS take in
nicotine by the same route smokers do.

3. Coughing

1. Problems with pregnancy
2. Pulmonary obstructive disease
3. Cancer (lungs, throat)

potential for abuse and physical

- legal drinking age is 18
- boys are far more likely to drink than
girls, but the females seem to be closing
