SOIL PROBLEMS AND CONSERVATION

SUSTAINABLE SOIL USE

• The wise use of soil resources, without a reduction in the amount or

fertility of soil so it is productive for future generation.
SOIL EROSION

• The wearing away or removal or soil from the land cause of water, wind,
ice and other agents.
• Water and wind are particularly effective in moving soil from one place to
another.
SOIL POLLUTION

• It is any physical or chemical change in soil that adversely affects the

health of plants and other organism living in or on the soil.
SOIL CONSERVATION AND
REGENERATION

• Promote good soil conservation practices for sustainable soil use.

Conservation tillage, crop rotation, contour plowing, strip cropping,
terracing, and shelterbelts minimize erosion and minerals depletion of
the soil.
CONSERVATION TILLAGE

• A method of cultivation in which residues from previous crop are left in

the soil, it helps to hold it in place until the newly planted seeds are
established.
CROP ROTATION

• Planting of a series of different crops in the same field over a period of

year. It is effective in decreasing insect damage and disease.
CONTOUR PLOWING

• Plowing that matches the natural contour of the land.

2 TYPES OF CONTOUR PLOWING

• 1. STRIP CROPPING - special type of contour plowing, produces

alternating strips of different crops along natural contours.

• 2. TERRACING - It can be use to level areas and thereby reduce soil

erosion due to gravity or water run-off. Terraces are small earthen
embankments placed across a steep hill side or mountain.
SHELTERBELTS

• A row of trees planted as a windbreak to reduce soil erosion.

• Protects the delicate fruits from the wind and reduce wind erosion of
farmland soil
