TYPES OF TOOLS, EQUIPMENT

AND MATERIALS

To ensure safety ,speed and success
in performing electrical installation the
electrician must have full knowledge of the
specific tools and equipments needed and
skill on how to use the correct tools for the
job.
• Tool Holster / Pouch
used to hold and
secure hand tools to
prevent slipping, falling
and injuries.
Electrician Pliers /
Linemen’s Side Cutting
A heavy-duty tool
designed for the
professional engaged in
electrical,
communications and
construction work.
Long Nose
It is designed for electrical,
telephone and electronic
work involving smaller
wire gauges. They will
reach into awkward places
and perform work difficult
with any other tool. Their
usefulness, however, is not
limited to wire work.

• Side Cutting Pliers /
Diagonal Cutting Pliers
used for cutting
medium or fine
wires ,insulation and
bending small soft
pieces of metal.
• Electrician’s Knife
used for insulating
wire conductors.
SCREWDRIVERS
Probably the most abused tool in the
homeowner's or professional's tool kit.
Screwdrivers are available in a wide variety
of shapes, sizes, and materials. But, they are
all intended for one simple use: driving and
with drawing threaded fasteners such as
wood screws, machine screws, and self-
tapping screws. Unfortunately, the
screwdriver is misused for prying, chiseling,
scraping, scoring – and only sometimes for its
intended use of driving screws!
Flat
The standard, or
conventional screwdriver
is used for screws with
slotted heads. This
screwdriver is usually
classified according to tip
width and blade length.

Phillips
A Phillips screwdriver
has four blades used to
install Phillips-head
screws. The tip looks
like a plus sign.

Stubby
Stubby screwdrivers
with rather wide tips for
driving screws in
confined quarters.

HAMMERS
Are striking tools and perhaps the most
widely used, and probably the most often
abused of all hand tools. They are made in
various types, sizes for specific purposes. They
should be selected for their intended uses and
used only for those purposes for which they
are designed.

Claw
Designed for driving
unhardened common nail
sets using the center of
the hammer face. The
claws are for pulling
common nails and should
not be struck against
metal.

Ball peen
Ball peen hammers of
the proper size are
designed for striking
chisels and punches, and
for riveting, shaping and
straightening
unhardened metal.
Mallet
Rubber and plastic
hammers are used for
setting stone. Plastic
hammers usually have
replaceable tips, available
in varying degrees of
hardness.
DRILLING TOOLS
An equipment used to make holes in building
structure for passage of wires and conduit in
both new and old installation, indoor or
outdoor wiring.

ELECTRIC DRILL
The most basic of the
electric drills, the rotary
drill is used mainly for
boring holes in a variety
of materials.

• Heat Gun
used for bending PVC
Polyvinyl Chloride.
Gimlets
A small hand tool
having a spiraled shank, a
screw tip, and a cross
handle and used for
boring holes.

Drill Bits
Normally made of
hardened or high speed
steel with two cutting
edges on the conical end
with two helical flutes that
act to move material away
from the cutting edges.

MEASURING INSTRUMENT
An instruments and tools use by electricians
to measure the voltage, current, resistance,
wire length, opening sizes of wire, conduit and
other items:
Clamp meter
A current clamp or
current probe is an
electrical device having
two jaws which open to
allow clamping around
an electrical conductor.

Multitester
A multimeter, also
known as a volt/ohm
meter or VOM, is an
electronic measuring
instrument that
combines several
measurement functions
in one unit.
Spirit Level
A level is used to
make sure your work is
level and plumb. A great
installation starts with
straight switch and outlet
covers.

Push-Pull Rule
A flexible steel rule
which coils into a case
when not in use.

• Fish Tape
flexible steel wire
used for pulling wires
inside the conduits.
Wire Gauge
American wire gauge (AWG),
also known as the Brown &
Sharpe wire gauge, is a
standardized wire gauge
system used since 1857
predominantly in the United
States for the diameters of
round, solid, nonferrous,
electrically conducting wire.

File
A metalworking and
woodworking tool used to
cut fine amounts of material
from a work piece. It most
commonly refers to the hand
tool style, which takes the
form of a hardened steel bar
with a series of sharp,
parallel ridges, called teeth.
• Hacksaw
used for cut metals.
Pipe Cutter
The "C" shaped frame
cutter is made with a
feed screw that causes
the moveable housing to
slide forward making
contact with the pipe.

• Pipe Threader
used to thread
around metal pipes.
• Pipe Vise
hold pipe while
cutting and threading.
Pipe Reamer
The spiral ratchet reamer
has self-feeding design
especially useful for easy,
fast, manual reaming. This
type of reamer is also
commonly used to enlarge
holes in conduit box outlets
or other sheet metal

• EMT Bender
used for bending EMT or similar thin
metal tubing.
• Bolt Cutter
used to cut bolts and large electrical wires
and cables.
ELECTRICAL MATERIALS
Electrical Material represents the parts or the
elements that are used in order to make each
and every electrical structure from a house
circuit to a big factory. Electrical Materials can be
the electrical fittings, the lugs, electrical circuit
breakers, the motor control, the electrical
conduit, the lighting or the enclosures.

Wires and Cables
A usually pliable metallic
strand or rod made in many
lengths and diameters,
sometimes clad and often
electrically insulated, used
chiefly for structural
support or to conduct
electricity.

Utility Box
A handy box mounts on
the surface of a wall and
can contain light switches
or receptacles.

Octagonal Box
In a junction box, wires
connect only to each
other, never to a switch,
receptacle or fixture. This
type of electrical box
allows circuits to be safely
split and branched into
different directions.
Square Box
Also called double-
gang box, these boxes
house two devices,
either a combination
outlet/switch or a pair of
outlets or switches in
one location.

Circuit Breaker Box
An electrical circuit
breaker panel is the
main electrical circuit
distributor inside of a
home.

Safety Switch Box
A switch used in interior
electric wiring which is
mounted inside a metal
box and operated from
outside the housing by
means of a handle
connected to the switch
mechanism.

Panel Box
The system that serves
as the source for
household or building
electricity. The panel box
is where the main
electrical service comes
in and is distributed
throughout the building.
Condulets
A special corner fitting
for joining two pieces of
conduit while providing
access for pulling wires
around the corner.

Conduit and Fittings
Electrical
conduits and fittings
are lengths of solid
tubing used to house,
protect, and cover
electrical wiring and
cables in power
distribution systems.
Connectors
Fittings for non-
threaded conduits are
either secured with set
screws or with a
compression nut that
encircles the conduit.

Cartridge Fuse
A cartridge-type fuse
consists of a small round
tube with a fuse inside
and metal contacts at
each end of the tube.

Knife Blade Fuse
A cartridge fuse having
a metal blade at each
end of a cylindrical tube
for making contact with
the fuse within.
Plug Fuses
Plug-type fuses have
bases that screw into a
socket that is located in
the fuse box, much like
putting a light bulb in a
socket.
Circuit Breaker
An electric safety device
housed in an electrical box
which breaks an electric
circuit automatically when
it becomes overloaded.
Breaker moves from "On"
to "Off" position.

Switches
A control consisting of
a mechanical or
electrical or electronic
device for making or
breaking or changing the
connections in a circuit

Clamps and Staple
Wire and cable clips
and staples are used to
bundle, clip, guide, and
protect conduit, wires
and cables

Electrical Tape
  A type of pressure-
sensitive tape used to
insulate electrical wires and
other material that conduct
electricity. It can be made of
many plastics, but vinyl is
most popular; it stretches
well and gives an effective
and long lasting insulation.
