HUMAN INFLUENCE ON THE

ENVIRONMENT
OBJECTIVE
1 State the problem with use of fossil fuels
2 State the effects of acid rain.
3 State the effects of global warning.
Problems with use of fossil fuels
• Air pollution e.g. acid rain
• Oil spillage
• Cost of extraction and transport
Effects of Acid rain
Effects of acid rain on the environment
Effects of acid rain solution
1. lowers pH of, soil and 1. use, alternative
water sources of energy
2. kills / damages plants 2. reduce use of coal
3. kills, fish and other
aquatic animals 3. Use of catalytic
converters
Effects of Global warming

1. Extreme weather conditions

2. Desertification
3. Higher sea levels due to
melting of polar ice
4. Flooding in coastal regions
5. Extinction of wild life such as
polar bear, Penguins
GLOBAL WARMING
• Heat radiation from the sun hits
the earth’s surface and is
reflected back into space. Some
of this heat is trapped by
greenhouse gases like carbon
dioxide and methane and this
warms up our planet.
TASK
Pros and cons of using Nuclear energy
Pesticides, Herbicides and non-biodegradable
plastics
• PESTICIDES: can kill useful
animals including
pollinators. Can poison top
carnivores
• HERBICIDES: can kill other
plants apart from weeds
• PLASTICS: are toxic when
burnt. Can trap animals. Can
be engulfed by aquatic
animals and this leads to
their death. Can block
drainages. Take up land for
agriculture
