AFFECTING PRECIPITATION CONTENTS What is precipitation Types of precipitation Factors affecting precipitation Short quiz What is precipitation ?
Precipitation is the process by
which water returns to Earth's surface from the atmosphere. Precipitation can take many forms or states of matter. Along with evaporation and condensation, precipitation is one of the three major parts of the global water cycle. RAIN Typ es of prec i pi t ati on Rain is water droplets that have condensed from atmospheric water vapor and then fall under gravity. SNOW Snow is precipitation that falls in the form of ice crystals. The ice crystals are formed individually in clouds, but when they fall, they stick together in clusters of snowflakes. HAIL • Hail is a form of precipitation consisting of solid ice that forms inside thunderstorm updrafts. • Hail can damage aircraft, homes and cars, and can be deadly to livestock and people. Factors affecting precipitation Prevailing Winds
• Winds from the direction that is predominant at a particular
place or season are prevailing winds.
• Air masses are moved from place to place by prevailing
winds.
• The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere influences how
much rain or snow falls. It also depends on which direction the winds are blowing. Winds blowing inland transport more water vapor than winds blowing over land. Mountain Ranges • A mountain range in the path of prevailing winds can also decide where precipitation falls. • When humid winds blow from the ocean toward coastal mountains, they are forced to rise. • The rising air cools and its water vapor condenses which form clouds. Seasonal Winds
• Winds that blow only during certain seasons is
known as seasonal winds. • A change in seasonal wind can affect precipitation. • The sea breeze blows inland from the ocean and gets very warm, and humid. As the humid air rises over the land, the air cols, producing heavy rains.
