CIVILIZATION
THE ARYANS

 The advanced harappan


civilization, which flourished
between 2500 and 1500 BCE,
reached a stage of stagnation
by 1500 BCE around this time,
the Aryans began to arrive in
India in several waves.
 They first settled in the Sapta
sindhu region, I .E .the region
of seven rivers they named it
Brahmavarta which means the
land of gods
POLITICAL ORGANIZATION

 The aryans were organized into many tribes called janas.


Jana consisted of a number of villages called gramas. A
grama was composed of number of families each village
was headed by a gramani are the village headman.
 Purohita performed religious ceremonies and advised the
king on important matters.
 Senani was the commander-in-chief of the warriors and
led the forces during the war.
 Each tribe had a king called rajan, the rajan did not have
absolute power. the sabha and samiti exercised control
over the king.
POSITION OF WOMEN

 Women enjoyed an important position in the


society.
 Monogamy was the usual practice. The they
were given opportunities for education.
Women scholars are believed to have
composed some of the rig Vedic hymns.
 Women could choose their husbands in a
ceremony called swayamVara. There was no
child marriage and widows were allowed to
remarry.
CLASS SYSTEM

 The aryans groups themselves according to their skills in performing certain jobs. This
eventually led to the development of the class or varnas in the Aryan society:-
 BRAHMANAS
 KSHATRIYAS
 VAISHYAS
 SHUDRAS
RELIGION

Aryans believed in one supreme


power, the creator of universe. They
worshipped different forces of nature
as gods and goddesses Indra’s the god
of rain and thunder, agni the God of
fire ,surya the sun God, varuna the
God of water, vayu the God of wind ,
soma the God of plants, Prithvi the
goddess of earth , usha the goddess of
dawn , and yama the God of death.
