Reproductive Biotechnology

Theriogenology
• Theriogenology is that branch of veterinary
medicine which deals with reproduction,
including the physiology and pathology of
male and female reproductive systems
and the clinical practice of veterinary
obstetrics, gynecology and semenology

Prerequisite to Understand
• Thorough knowledge of reproductive
physiology
– Sources, target and functions of all hormones
• Application of the knowledge
– For economic benefits
• Increasing production
– Enhancing reproductive efficiency
• Reducing the cost of production and management
Questions
• During estrous cycle;
– why estrogen decrease with the increase in
progesterone?
– Why PGF2 do not regress early CL?
– Which hormone support CL and act as
luteotropic in cattle?
– Give an example of positive feed back?
Artificial Insemination (A.I.)
• It is one of the early reproductive
biotechnologies.
• Artificial insemination permits the use of
superior males for breeding purpose
• In this technique semen from superior
males is collected and used to inseminate
large number of females.
Story of Reproductive biotechnology

• Hundred of years ago, Cattle were

domesticated, their reproduction was
controlled and cows to increase milk
production for human use
• Large industries producing butter, cheese
and a variety of related products.
• The use of AI in cattle has allowed the
introduction of highly successful genetic
improvement programs for increasing milk
yield and has reduced the incidence of
disease.
Cont.
• AI industry developed the ability to freeze-store or
cryopreserve sperm.
– An extensive programmes in the cryopreservation of
biological tissue in the medical world today are largely
due to the pioneering work carried out on the
cryopreservation of cattle sperm about 50 years ago.
• Continuous attempts to expand and increase the
efficiency of the AI industry have concentrated on
a range of aspects;
– Increase conception rate
– Reducing sperm number per insemination, and
insemination technique and timing.
– Reducing the cost of animal production
Controlled Breeding
• Why to Control cattle or buffalo breeding?

• How can we do that?

• What are our limitations?

Estrus Synchronization
– Bringing the randomly cycling females into one
stage of cycle (estrus) is called estrus
synchronization
• Prolonging the estrus cycle
• Shortening the estrus cycle
