The Truth about Puppets
If you have been
entertained by commercial
puppets, you can also make
others smile by creating
your own puppet then
sharing the story you want
to tell.
There are a few things you need to consider before
making a puppet. You need to decide on the following:

 Will the puppet be a boy or a girl?

 Will the puppet be a human or an animal?
 If it is human, will it be old or young?
 If it is an animal, will it fly, walk or swim?
 Will the puppet be a hero or a villain?
 Will the puppet sing, dance or just talk?
 What is the setting of the story?
The role of your puppet will be your guide on how it should look and what it
should wear.
Take note also of how you
will hold the puppet you
created. Will it be with just
one finger, two or three
fingers, one hand or both
hands?
You need to make sure it fits
perfectly so you will not have
a hard time controlling it.
Different Types of
Puppets
If you had fun designing and creating
masks, you will not have a hard time
making puppets. That is because you
can use the same materials to make
different kinds of puppets-finger
puppets, hand puppets, stick puppets,
shadow puppets and string puppets.
Finger puppets
can be made using felt
paper and cardboard.

Hand puppets
can be made of socks
and foam or small brown
paper bags.
Sticks puppets
can be made using yarn,
cloth and papiermache
String puppets
can have two strings or
several strings.
controlled from above
using wires or strings.
Shadow puppets
can use both sticks
and strings.
You can use anything to put
your puppet together, so be
resourceful in choosing the
materials that you will use. You
do not need to buy them. Look
around and you will see that
there are a lot of materials
that have the right lines,
shape, color and texture that
you can use for your puppets.
Nature provides fallen twigs,
tree bark or sturdy leaves and
feathers. Do not throw away those
little pieces of carton, cardboard,
popsicle sticks, little pieces of
cloth, rubber bands, or plastic
straw lying around your house or
school. Since puppets can be real
or imaginary characters, you need
to show that you can use materials
that are readily available.
Creating Puppets
Once you have created the puppet
that you like, store them in a box so
you can use it again and again.
Puppets are adored by many, so be
on the lookout for who you can use it
with to tell a story, a joke or simply
make someone smile when they sad.
Creating puppets may take time
but once you have created one, your
puppet will inspire you to make it
real.
